UNDP in The Gambia
Mission Statement: "Our vision is to become a dynamic, responsive and valuable
partner to the people of The Gambia in pursuit of human dignity and a better
life for all. Our mission is to support the Government and people of The Gambia
to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and sustainable human development.
We will strive for excellence and impartiality and creatively respond to the
development needs of The Gambia in line with national priorities and in
accordance with our comparative advantage."
UNDP is the UN's global development network,
advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and
resources to help people build a better life.
In The Gambia UNDP seeks to be a valued, trusted and reliable development
partner to the Government and all key stakeholders in national development. As
The Gambia formulates its own development solutions, UNDP provides ideas,
access to its global knowledge networks and technical expertise to boost
capacity development and to promote national efforts to eradicate poverty and
attain the Millennium Development Goals.
UNDP's focus is on capacity development for pro poor growth and accountability
in partnership with Government, the UN system, civil society, and development
partners. The ultimate goal is to support the development efforts of the
government of the Gambia through its Country Program Document and Country
Program Action Plan (CPAP) 2007-2011. This is a five years framework for mutual
cooperation between the government of the Gambia and the UNDP. It takes into
account the Gambia’s Long Term Strategy, Vision 2020 and draws upon the Poverty
Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP2), Common Country Assessment (CCA), United
Nation Development Framework (UNDAF) and the Country
Program Document (CPD) 2007-2011, which collectively
reflects the country’s development priorities and embodies the national commitment
to the attainment of the MDGS.
UNDP's core areas of focus in the 2007-2011 cycles are:
·
Poverty reduction and achieving the MDGs
·
Human rights and governance
The major thrust of UNDP's support in these areas will be to support The Gambia
attain the Millennium Development Goals and reduce overall levels of poverty
especially among the most vulnerable and marginalized sectors of the society.
UNDPs support will also aim to promote and protect human rights and gender equality
ensure good governance and spur the participation and involvement of civil
society in promoting these goals.
