Millennium Development GoalsIn September 2000, one hundred and eighty nine Heads of State and Government, including The Gambia, adopted the Millennium Declaration in New York, USA. This declaration placed peace, security, and development concerns at the top of the international agenda and recognized "the collective responsibility to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality, and equity at the global level". The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as contained in the Millennium Declaration consist of 8 Goals, 18 Targets and 48 Indicators. The eight Goals are as follows:
2. Achieve universal primary education 3. Promote gender equality and empower women 4. Reduce child mortality 5. Improve maternal health 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases 7. Ensure environmental sustainability 8.
