»Project Title: The GEF Small Grants Programme

Development Objectives

The goal of the fourth operational phase is global environmental benefits secured in the GEF focal areas through community-based initiatives and actions.

Activities

  • Constitute National Project Steering Committee
  • Develop GEF SG Programme strategic document
  • Undertake sensitization of CSOs on GEF SG programme opportunities and procedures
  • Consolidate community-based interventions through
    integration and implementation of community
    protected area governance approaches.
  • Sustainable use of biodiversity established through community based conservation, innovative approaches and market mechanisms.
  • Intensify the replication of climate change mitigation barrier through implementation of local climate change activities linked to market mechanisms and policy interventions
  • Community based adaptation practices promoted and incorporated in national development priorities
  • International waters and community based approaches for implementation of Strategic Action Programmes
  • Consolidation of experiences and models on community-based sustainable land management
  • Capacity enhancement at community level with knowledge and good practices shared with global networks and non-party states and authorities of the Stockholm Convention
  • Enhance the GEF role of strengthening partnerships and resource mobilization with bilateral and multilateral donors, governments programs and private sector.
  • Capacity building of community and civil society constituencies through awareness of GEF concerns
  • Codification and dissemination of community knowledge and codified best practices

Intended Results

Through this project, the capacities of CSOs will be enhanced through the implementation of community based natural resource management projects, which will directly contribute to the achievement of MDGs and PRSP as they relate to poverty reduction, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, land degradation, climate change, international waters etc.
