»Project Title: Capacity Development of the National Assembly

Development Objectives

- Economic and political systems utilize transparent, accountable, participatory and inclusive decision making processes at national and decentralized levels.
- Strengthened key governance institutions and sustainable and transparent electoral processes and systems enhanced to sustain democratic principles.
- Strengthened key governance institutions to sustain democratic principles.

Activities

  • Sensitization and training of NAMs in socio-economic issues (MDG’s, PRSP, policy development etc.).
  • Records Management Training for staff of the Office of the Clerk
  • IT computer literacy trainings for NAM’s and staff of the Office of the Clerk
  • Purchase of IT and other equipment
  • Conduct Hansard training for the staff of the Office of the Clerk
  • Reconstruct and continuously update the website & publication of NA pr-documents
  • Establish and train a press corps of parliamentary journalists
  • Conduct a capacity needs assessment and develop a long-term strategy for capacity development of the National assembly
  • Develop a full-fledged project document in consultation with relevant stakeholders

Intended Results

The Country Programme Action Plan (CPAP) 2007-2011 recognises the imperative role the National Assembly plays in creating an enabling policy environment and framework for implementing pro-poor growth, and deepening the democratic processes in The Gambia. The project seeks to foster a broad-based partnership between the National Assembly and all the relevant stakeholders. It is envisaged that the formulation of a comprehensive capacity development strategy and long-term technical assistance project will provide a mechanism to marshal support of and enhance partnership with the development community
