MDG 2014 Report

March 6, 2015

Since the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2000, the Government of The Gambia has integrated them into the national development policy frameworks in 2002. PRSPs I and II and the successor programme the Programme for Accelerated Growth and Employment (PAGE) covering the period 2012 - 2015 and other sectoral policies are  the instruments for achieving international development goals and the objectives of the home grown Vision 2020.

The Minimum Development Goals (MDGs) Status Report 2014 is the seventh MDG report prepared by The Gambia. The first MDGs report was produced in 2003. Since then six reports were produced in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010 and the 2012.  The regular preparation of MDG reports is a testimony of The Gambia’s commitment to the attainment of The MDG goals by 2015.

The Gambia has made significant progress towards the implementation of the MDGs. Progress has been made in all MDGs. In particular, Goal 2- achieving universal education, Goal 3- promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women, Goal 5- reducing child mortality are achieved. Whilst, on Goal 1- eradication of poverty and hunger; and Goal 7 – combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and other appreciable improvements have been registered towards achieving the targets. Goal 4- improving maternal health remains to be a concern.  In relation to Goal 8- Partnership for development – The Gambia reached HIPC Completion Point in December 2007 and has since then been receiving extensive debt relief under the enhanced Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) and Initiative and the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI). Currently, there is budget support from the African Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank and programme budget support from EU, FTI and Global Fund. The UN System in The Gambia has within the framework of the UNDAF been providing invaluable support to the Government to achieve the objectives of the PRSPs and now PAGE as a means of realizing the MDG and Vision 2020 goals.
